When does it make sense to insulate from above?

Insulating from above is particularly relevant if you’re already planning to replace your flooring—perhaps during a renovation of your living room, kitchen, or bedroom. It’s also a practical option if you don’t have access to the underside of the floor, such as in homes without a basement or crawl space.

By insulating from above, you can also correct uneven floors, improve sound insulation, and create a more comfortable indoor climate. The key is to choose the right materials and methods so you don’t lose too much height or run into issues with doors and trim.

Choosing the right insulation material

There are several types of insulation suitable for installing above the subfloor. The best choice depends on how much space you have and the type of flooring you plan to install.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Remove the existing flooring – Take up the old floor covering to expose the subfloor or structural base.
  2. Inspect the subfloor – Check for damage, rot, or moisture issues before proceeding.
  3. Install a vapour barrier – Especially important if you’re insulating above an unheated space, such as a garage or crawl space, to prevent moisture buildup.
  4. Lay the insulation boards – Fit them tightly together with no gaps. Seal joints with tape to ensure airtightness.
  5. Add subfloor panels and new flooring – Finish with plywood or OSB panels, then install your chosen floor covering.

With careful planning, you can often achieve a total build-up of just 3–5 cm while still gaining a noticeable improvement in comfort and energy efficiency.
